Holy Family Novena

Image
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph provides every family an inspiration and model to follow. Starts: Nine days before the Feastday Feastday: The feast is celebrated on the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas, that is, the Sunday between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day (both exclusive), or if both Christmas Day and the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God are Sundays, on 30 December (always a Friday in such years). Holy Family Novena History The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph provides every family an inspiration and model to follow. Scripture and Tradition tell us only bits and pieces of the three decades that Jesus spent with His family. Of course, we have the infancy narratives, a small section of his childhood as revealed in the flight to Egypt, and years later the finding of the child Jesus in the Temple, but otherwise we know little about their life. Unfortunately, the depictions of Mary and Joseph in popular culture — including well-meaning movie

Our Lady of Guadalupe Novena

Image
Our Lady appeared in the year 1531 to Juan Diego, a simple peasant of Aztec descent who had converted to Catholicism. Starts: December 3rd Feastday: December 12th History Our Lady appeared in the year 1531 to Juan Diego, a simple peasant of Aztec descent who had converted to Catholicism. She told him to have the bishop build a church on the hill where she appeared, and Juan Diego dutifully told the bishop, but he was not believed at first; instead, a miraculous sign was demanded to prove it was Our Lady. Our Lady of Guadalupe Novena Our Lady worked the miraculous sign by having roses grow on this hill in the winter, then arranged the roses in Juan Diego’s tilma (a long tunic), and when Juan Diego showed the bishop by letting the roses fall to the ground, not only did the roses themselves demonstrate the authenticity of the appearance but even more so the fact that the roses had miraculously blazed an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on his tilma. The bishop believed him

Starts: November 30th Feastday: December 25th History The St. Andrew Christmas novena is traditionally recited 15 times per day starting on November 30th and going through Christmas Day on December 25th. St. Andrew Christmas Novena Since this novena is prayed during Advent, it perfectly helps us to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ as Christmas, one of the main purposes of the Advent season. One tip with this novena: if you have scrupulosity trying to pray the novena exactly 15 times per day, simply pray it every time it comes into your mind during each day. (Currently our app only supports nine-day novenas, so by popular demand we are adding in this novena starting at nine days before Christmas, but hope to support novenas of differing lengths soon.) Introduction prayer Hail and blessed be the hour and mome

Immaculate Conception Novena

Image
Immaculate Conception Novena Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette in Lourdes, France and confirmed that she was “the Immaculate Conception.” Starts: November 29th Feastday: December 8th History From early in the Church’s history, saints spoke of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the highest regard, in particular regarding her purity and holiness. The words of the Archangel Gabriel to her, addressing her as Full of Grace, conveyed a perfection of grace as a past and present state — in a word, a singular grace given to her by God to be preserved from the stain of original sin. In her wisdom, the Church was careful to preserve this Tradition, and reverence and veneration of Our Lady grew as the centuries passed. Then, in the mid-1800s, the Church declared the Immaculate Conception to be irreformable dogma. A few years later Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette in Lourdes, France and confirmed that she was “the Immaculate Conception.” Daily Prayer (to be said each day) Imm

As a girl, Cecilia made a vow of virginity to God. She spent her time composing songs in praise of God. Her family compelled her to marry a pagan nobleman named Valerian however. Cecilia told Valerian of her vow and that an angel was always at her side. She asked Valerian to respect her vow of virginity, even in marriage, or God would send her angel to harm him. Valerian believed her, and he honored her vow. Further, he was told that if he became a Christian, he would see Cecilia’s angel next to her. Pope Urban baptized Valerian, and when he returned home, he saw Cecilia’s angel right next to her. He told all this to his brother, Tiburtius, who also became Catholic through Cecilia’s evangelization. Pope Urban then baptized Tiburtius, and he too could see the angel. It was discovered that V
